Sunday night witnessed a shocking explosion at the Rivers State House of Assembly complex.
Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, and former Governor, Nyesom Wike.Allegations of a plan to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara surrounded the incident.
Suspected arsonists reportedly threw an explosive into the complex at approximately 9:25pm, resulting in a fire that engulfed the building.
Although Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, could not be reached on her mobile, a senior police officer confirmed the occurrence to our correspondent.
According to our sources, various properties inside the chamber were destroyed.
[chamber after explosion]Speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident, the police officer claimed the incident had political motives.
“Yes it is true. The fire occurred around 9:30pm or so. But as we speak, it (the fire) has been put out by firefighters who arrived at the scene just in time. I think it has to do with politics,” he stated.
Our correspondent discovered that certain lawmakers in the state legislature had finalized plans to impeach the House leader, Eddison Ehie, as a prelude to Fubara’s removal.
The House leader had purportedly been obstructing efforts to oust Fubara.
Our reporter, who visited the Assembly at around 10:30 pm, noticed that the complex was under the control of the police and other security operatives. Approximately 17 security trucks and one Armoured Personnel Carrier were stationed at the entrance and surrounding areas.
